Bike to Work Safety Tips

The Bike On, Bike Off was recently launched by the Light Rail Transit Authority which allows folding bicycles to be carried inside the trains. This will allow commuters who cycle to work to ride their bikes to the nearest train station, bring their bikes inside the trains and then get-off the nearest station from their work and start pedaling again, providing a seamless integration between two eco-friendly mode of transport.

A lot of workers now are cycling to work since it is a very cheap mode of transport and insulates you from the terrible traffic, specially in major urban areas. But just like everything, cycling also poses some risks to the commuter, thus the need to practice safe habits in road cycling.

Here are some important safety tips:

1)Always wear a CPSC-approved helmet.
2)Check tire pressure, front and rear breaks before every ride.
3)When turning, always make hand-signal. Use the left arm and keep your right arm on the handle.
4)Never pass a vehicle on a U-turn on the driver side, always on the passenger side.
5)Travel straight and keep to your lane.
6)Wear bright clothes.
7)Protect yourself from the sun.
8)Wear reflective garments when traveling at night.
9)Always turn on red blinker/s during night rides.

Thank you for the concern. I also saw that on the news, indeed it is a terrible thing. This makes it more important for all of us who bike to work to be always placing safety as the number one priority.

great tips, and many that although we know, we often forget to actually do them! My biggest tip is to get the high visibility clothing on in the dark on when it's pretty grey out. It's also important that the motorists out there consider cyclist safety too and look out for us!

Exactly! It must be a two-way street (no-pun intended) when it comes to safety in the streets. Other motorists should be aware of how to act when there are cyclists in the road. Keep cycling!
